Fall Studies at Highlands

All adults are invited to join one of our spiritual formation classes offered this Fall. Being part of a fall class or small group focused on Adult Christian Formation offers a unique opportunity for spiritual growth and deepening one's faith. In a supportive and nurturing environment, individuals can engage in meaningful discussions, study scripture together, and explore theological concepts that can enrich their understanding of God and the Christian faith. Through study and reading together, we can cultivate a deeper relationship with God, gain new insights, and strengthen our spiritual lives. This intentional focus on Christian formation during the fall season allows us to prepare our hearts and minds for the upcoming year, equipping us with the knowledge and tools needed to live out our faith in a meaningful and impactful way. By actively participating in a class or small group, we can experience personal transformation, build community with fellow believers, and ultimately grow closer to God as we journey together on the path of discipleship.

Sunday School Offerings

September 7 - October 5

Christ of the Celts

From Ireland to Iona, to the UK and beyond, this class will reflect on the “forgotten” Jesus - the Christ of the ancient Celtic tradition. The Celtic Christ offers new hope for achieving harmony, healing, and renewal for human beings and for all of creation. We will explore their ancient writings and saints, using their vision of Christianity which predates much of Western Christianity. If you are looking for a way to be Christian that is not focused on judgment, shame, and power, consider joining in this study of Christ of the Celts by J. Philip Newell, led by Reverend Mikah Hudson.

Led by Rev. Mikah Hudson
Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in Room 204

The Garden of Eden in Alabama:
“Keeping” Our Good Home

One of God’s first commandments was for Adam and Eve to tend the garden, a first clue that people of faith are to be good stewards and care for creation. Join Dr. Larry Brasher for two classes considering the biblical command to "keep" God's creation and three classes with experts on Alabama birds, trees, and land preservation.

Led by Dr. Larry Brasher
Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in Room 209

Wholehearted Faith

Come explore a touching series of deeply human essays from the late Rachel Held Evans, finished with the editing expertise of her dear friend Jeff Chu. Discover why so many faith seekers and questioners have found in Rachel’s writings something profoundly moving, fearlessly honest and yet, relentlessly hopeful. Along the way, Rachel realized for her faith to survive it had to change and evolve. If you, too, long for a greater sense of spiritual wholeness or you aren’t sure Church is still for you, but don’t want to let go of Jesus, join us for rich conversation and reflection!

Led by Kathleen Bynum Lalor
Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in Room 210

Mindfulness

Join us each week in the chapel to practice and explore mindfulness meditation together. These gatherings will offer a peaceful space to pause, reflect on your week, and engage in a 10-20 minute guided meditation with friends. Classes are informal and group-led. We may pick a book to read together, or we may not. What you can always count on is a welcoming space, a moment of calm, and a shared sense of connection to navigate our mindfulness journeys together.

Led by Wilson Nash, George Gaskin, and Kyle McKinnon
Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in The Chapel

Fall Study Opportunities

Genesis & Exodus

BEGINS SEPTEMBER 9

Genesis and Exodus, the first two books of the Bible, are foundational for understanding God's plan of salvation and the history of God’s people. Genesis explores creation, the early history of humanity, and the beginning of God's covenant with Abraham. Exodus details the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt, the giving of the Law, and the establishment of the covenant at Mount Sinai. Join us this Fall to explore these two important books of the Bible.

Led by Reggie Holder
Tuesdays at 11:45 in Room 204

Lunch available with weekly RSVP.

Story & Song

Inspired by Nadia Bolz-Weber’s revival here last winter, we are in the process of designing evenings of Story and Song to be held in the chapel. This will be a time of hearing different stories of faith and singing together. Stay tuned.
